The job of  RFID is primarily the same one that barcodes perform today; they store and information about the item it is attached to. RFID systems are however, far superior to barcodes.

For example, they can process several items at once without any direct contact. This means that you can do your entire store inventory in a matter of minutes! You can even scan for items inside closed glass, wood or cardboard boxes.

A RFID tag consists of a microchip and a small antennae.  The  antennae transmits information to a reading device known as a RFID reader. A lot of information can be stored on a RFID tag attached to a piece of jewelry than a barcode label- upto several kilobytes. This means that you can store and track each individual jewlery and all its detail.

For example, you can store the date you bought it, the grams of gold it has, which employee is assigned to it- a lot of information that you couldn't track earlier.
